Lincoln High School: Its History and Legacy with Albert E. White Thursday, November 30 6pm - FREE (Pre-registration via Eventbrite required)
Event Details
We are honored to welcome author Albert E. White to speak about his book, "Lincoln High School: Its History and Legacy." Opened in 1923, Lincoln High School (LHS) replaced Union Academy, the premier school for African American students in Alachua County. Lincoln High School was accredited in 1926, only the second African-American high school in the state to do so. For over 40 years LHS was an integral part of the African-American community and protests were staged in 1969 when the school board decided to close it rather than integrate it. A book signing with co-author Dr. Kevin McCarthy will follow Mr. White's presentation.
Albert E. White is a Gainesville native, graduate of Lincoln High School, and the current president of the alumni association. He received his B.S. Degree in Biology from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC, and his Master's Degree in Animal Physiology from the University of Florida. He retired from Gainesville Regional Utilities where he served as a supervisor, manager and division head for 21 years and returned to GRU for a second stint serving on the executive staff as the Director of Community Relations for nine years. Albert also served 5 years as Vice President of Public Affairs and Business Development and later as Interim Executive Director of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce making him the first African-American to serve in these two roles. Mr. White has served on numerous boards and committees and is a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church.
